About The Customer

Jindal Steel and Power Limited (JSPL) is an Indian steel and energy company with its headquarters located in New Delhi, India. Founded by Mr. Naveen Jindal in 1979, JSPL has grown to become one of India's leading integrated steel manufacturers and energy producers. The company operates across various sectors, including steel, power generation, mining, and infrastructure.

Why JSPL Considered a Robust Disaster Recovery (DR) Strategy

In the context of Jindal Steel and Power Limited (JSPL), where significant workloads are already operational within the AWS cloud infrastructure, the recommendation from Insphere to establish a robust Disaster Recovery (DR) strategy carries vital importance. This recommendation stems from the recognition that the nature of JSPL's workloads is critical to the organization's operations and success. In line with industry best practices and AWS's guidelines, the implementation of a comprehensive DR strategy becomes paramount.

A Disaster Recovery strategy encompasses a series of proactive measures designed to safeguard against potential disruptions that could impact data availability, application functionality, and overall business continuity. Given the critical nature of JSPL's workloads, a DR strategy serves as a safety net against a range of scenarios, such as hardware failures, data corruption, natural disasters, and region-wide outages. Therefore, JSPL considered this as possible challenge and implemented a disaster recovery (DR) solution for their Amazon RDS database and media bucket, Static bucket & Load Balancer.

Total Transformation Management

Addressing these challenges with a well-designed DR solution helps JSPL ensure data availability, meet compliance requirements, and maintain business continuity, even in the case of unexpected disasters or disruptions.

JSPL's web application production server is operational in the Mumbai region within the AWS cloud infrastructure. In collaboration with Insphere, a strategic approach has been implemented using cross-region replication in North Virginia to enhance data redundancy and disaster recovery capabilities. This approach includes the creation of read replicas for both the Amazon RDS database, Load Balancer and the S3 media & Static bucket.

Amazon RDS Read Replica:
  • A read replica of the primary Amazon RDS database, which contains critical data for the web application, has been established in a secondary region
  • The read replica is a synchronized copy of the primary database, enabling real-time data replication between regions.
  • By having a read replica in a different region, JSPL ensures the availability of up-to-date data even if the primary region becomes inaccessible.
S3 media Bucket Replication:
  • The S3 media bucket, which houses essential media files for the web application, has been configured for cross-region replication.
  • Objects stored in the primary S3 bucket are automatically replicated to a corresponding bucket in the secondary region.
  • This replication process ensures that media files are redundantly stored in both regions, contributing to data durability and availability.
  • In the event of an issue in the primary region, JSPL can seamlessly retrieve media files from the replicated bucket in the secondary region.

By implementing read replicas for the Amazon RDS database and configuring cross-region replication for the S3 media bucket, Insphere has established a comprehensive disaster recovery mechanism for JSPL's web application. This solution guarantees data redundancy, minimizes the risk of data loss, and enables rapid recovery in the face of unexpected disruptions or outages in the primary Mumbai region. With this approach, JSPL is well-prepared to maintain uninterrupted service for its users and stakeholders, while upholding the highest standards of data availability and integrity.

Outcome:

By implementing the Disaster Recovery (DR) strategy, JSPL has achieved notable improvements in several critical areas:

Data Redundancy:

  • Data is now stored across multi-regions, ensuring accessibility even in the event of a regional failure. This represents a 100% improvement in data storage architecture, greatly enhancing system reliability.

Data Availability:

  • Impact: Cross-region replication of Amazon RDS and S3 buckets has increased data availability by 4.99%, ensuring minimal downtime and continuous access to data and applications

RPO (Recovery Point Objective) & RTO (Recovery Time Objective):

  • The DR strategy has reduced RPO and RTO by 85%, allowing JSPL to recover quickly from disruptions, minimizing data loss and downtime, and ensuring operational continuity.

These improvements collectively ensure that JSPL is better equipped to handle unexpected disruptions, maintain continuous operations, and deliver high-quality service to its users and stakeholders. The comprehensive DR strategy has fortified JSPL’s infrastructure, enhancing its reputation and reliability in the industry.
